Description
The Rick and Alleen Duffy Research Fellowship of Northwell Health is a new position managed in a collaborative effort by the Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery and the Department of Research. This research fellowship was created to support and promote academic and research activities to advance the scientific knowledge base in the field of cardiothoracic surgery. The Cardiovascular Institute will provide physician leadership oversight and mentorship to this fellow in conjunction with guidance from the department of research. The Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research of Northwell Health is well known for its high-quality research affords this fellow access to an abundance of resources. Endowment to this fellowship will support a wide range of ongoing and new clinical research to examine important topics such as the pathophysiology cardiovascular disease, clinical risk factors, current clinical practice in the management of the advanced atherosclerotic and valvular heart disease, drug and device therapies, patient experience, and short- and long-term outcomes after surgery.
Requirements
The research fellow position means a post-graduate residency position which:
i. shall report directly to the Chairperson, South Shore University Hospital Cardiothoracic and have a dotted lines reporting structure to the Research Physician leaders at both Lenox Hill Hospital, North Shore University Hospital, Staten Island University Hospital.
ii. shall be a graduate of an accredited medical school or a resident or graduate of an ACGME accredited residency program and if current, shall remain in excellent academic standing with permission from Program Director and Chairman to apply for dedicated research fellowship.
iii. shall be the equivalent to a full-time position comprising of no less than forty hours per week.
iv. shall be reimbursed by grant funding.
v. shall be completed in 24-month time frame as structured by usual fellowship standards, starting July 1, 2025, to June 30, 2027, and so forth.
vi. shall exceed the minimum standards required by a residency review committee in the specialty the research fellow has trained or is currently training.
vii. shall be filled by a research fellow who will receive formalized instruction in clinical research, including biostatistics, clinical trial design, research ethics, grant writing and regulatory guidelines
viii. shall be supervised by a sponsor-mentor who is a member of the research team with experience as Principal Investigator and who remains current with Northwell Health Research Policy & Procedures and
ix. shall be filled by a research fellow who is:
a. a United States resident who is a medical school graduate that is pursuing a Cardiovascular residency
b. an international cardiothoracic surgeon pursing further research studies
Job Qualification
Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Philosophy required.
1-3 years of relevant experience, required.
Graduate of an accredited medical school or a resident or graduate of an ACGME accredited residency program and if current, shall remain in excellent academic standing with permission from Program Director and Chairman to apply for dedicated research fellowship, strongly preferred.
Experience with clinical research, including biostatistics, clinical trial design, research ethics, grant writing and regulatory guidelines, highly preferred
**Must be able to travel to other sites as necessary: Lenox Hill Hospital in NYC and North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, NY
